README_NCEP_CRYSTAL-FACE FILE NAMING CONVENTION NCEP_[region]_init.[yy][mm].[variable name] VARIABLE NAMES hgt - geopotential height (gpm) air - temperature (Kelvin) uwnd - u-velocity of wind (meters per second) vwnd - v-velocity of wind (meters per second) rhum - relative humidity (percent) slp - sea-level pressure (pascals) pres.sfc - surface pressure (pascals) skt.sfc - surface temperature (Kelvin) tmp.0-10cm - soil temperature 0 - 10 cm (Kelvin) tmp.10-200cm - soil temperature 10 - 200 cm (Kelvin) soilw.0-10cm - soil moisture 0 - 10 cm (fraction) soilw.10-200cm - soil moisture 10 - 200 cm (fraction) FILE FORMAT All files are binary files containing a data map for each available pressure level and time step for each field study day occurring in the month. All available pressure level maps for a time step are written starting with the pressure level closest to the surface and continuing up through the atmosphere and then the maps for the next time step begin. There are no headers. AVAILABLE PRESSURE LEVELS Air temperature, Geopotential height, and U-wind and V-wind data are available at 1000 ,925, 850, 700, 600, 500, 400, 300, 250, 200, 150, 100, 70, 50, 30, 20, 10 mb. Relative humidity and Specific humidity data are available at 1000, 925, 850, 700, 600, 500, 400, 300 mb. Vertical velocity data are available at 1000, 925, 850, 700, 600, 500, 400, 300, 250, 200, 150, 100 mb. Surface pressure, Sea-level pressure, Surface Temperature, Soil Temperature (0-10 cm), Soil Temperature (10-200 cm), Soil moisture (0-10 cm), and Soil Moisture(10-200 cm) data are available at a single level. Land/sea mask and surface height data are also available. SPATIAL COVERAGE AND RESOLUTION The subset map is 7 x 8 (longitude x latitude) and has a total of 57 cells. Longitude varies first, and begins at 92W and proceeds eastward to 74W in increments of 2.50 degrees. Latitude begins at 10N and proceeds northward to 30N in increments of 2.50 degrees. TEMPORAL COVERAGE AND RESOLUTION Two maps are available for each day, 00 UTC and 12 UTC. SPECIAL DATA VALUES Missing data are assigned the value -1000.0 SURFACE FEATURE MAPS A land/water map and a topographic map are also available for the region. The land/water map is called NCEP_crystal-face_init.land and the topographic map is NCEP_crystal-face_init.hgt.sfc.
