MODEL INITIALIZATION DATA FOR GALE FIELD CAMPAIGN
The Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment (GALE) was conducted over the eastern U.S. from 15 January through 15 March 1986 (Dirks, R.A., J.P. Kuettner and J.A. Moore, 1988, Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc. 69, 148-160) to study mesoscale and air-sea interaction processes that affect the development of east coast winter storms. Observations were collected from a heavily augmented surface and upper air meteorological network, including 4 towers, 6 ocean buoys, two research ships plus "ships of opportunity", from 15 meteorological radars and 7 research radars, from 9 aircraft, and 4 satellites.
This case study presents data from 15 Jan 1986 to 15 March 1986
and covers a region from 25N to 50N latitude and from 90W to 50W longitude.
6-hourly NCEP Reanalysis data are available here for certain pressure level, surface, and surface flux variables.- Air temperature, Geopotential height, and U-wind and V-wind data are available at 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 850, 925, 1000 mb.
- Relative humidity and Specific humidity data are available at 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 850, 925, 1000 mb.
- Vertical velocity data are available at 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 850, 925, 1000 mb.
- Surface pressure, Sea-level pressure, Surface Temperature, Soil Temperature (0-10 cm), Soil Temperature (10-200 cm), Soil moisture (0-10 cm), and Soil Moisture(10-200 cm) data are available at a single level.
- A land/sea map and surface height map are also available.
