The Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment (GALE) was conducted over the eastern U.S. from 15 January through 15 March 1986 (Dirks, R.A., J.P. Kuettner and J.A. Moore, 1988, Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc. 69, 148-160) to study mesoscale and air-sea interaction processes that affect the development of east coast winter storms. Observations were collected from a heavily augmented surface and upper air meteorological network, including 4 towers, 6 ocean buoys, two research ships plus "ships of opportunity", from 15 meteorological radars and 7 research radars, from 9 aircraft, and 4 satellites.
The data presented here are from 15 Jan 1986 to 15 March 1986 and cover a region from 25N to 50N latitude and from 90W to 50W longitude.
Selected variables from the TOVS are available here for display as GIF images, or for downloading to your local disk. If you are downloading data, please see the browse data format description.
