NCEP/NCAR REANALYSIS FOR EPIC 2001 FIELD CAMPAIGN

The purpose of the project was to investigate processes in the atmosphere and ocean that are known to be poorly represented in climate models: deep convective processes in the ITCZ, low-level cross-equatorial atmospheric flow into the ITCZ, mixing, transport and energy balance in the thin layer of warm surface water north of the equator and energy balance in the stratocumulus-topped region of cold water south of the equator.water south of the equator.

The data presented here are from 1 Sep 2001 to 31 Oct 2001 and cover a region from 5S to 20N latitude and from 110W to 85W longitude.

Selected variables from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis are available here for display as GIF images, or for downloading to your local disk. If you are downloading data, please see the browse data format description. Also take note of the version and reference information. The full documentation for the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data can be found at the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis webpage.

If you are downloading multiple files, please use the GCSS-DIME ftp site (ftp gcss-dime.giss.nasa.gov/pub/EPIC2001/NCEP).

NOTE: On March 2008 an error was found in the subsetted NCEP data files, where all the daily data (four 6-hourly files) for a specific day/variable were actually extracted from the UTC 00 data. Hence 6-hourly data for a specific day/variable had the same UTC 00 values. This set was corrected and now the accurate data is available from the ftp site mentioned above.
